This Is It

Tomorrow! Not sure if I’ll sleep tonight.
Tomorrow I leave for the SCBWI Writer’s Conference in LA! Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I will be attending workshops, autograph parties, gala’s, critiques, you name it. I’m rooming with a published author (Val Hobbs)—what are the odds! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am so blessed to be going. I think God has a plan for me at this conference.

Can’t wait to share everything I learn when I get back!

List Time

Fave things right now:
Starbucks’ Treat Receipts: make purchase before 2pm, bring your receipt back after 2pm and get any grande bev for $2. Best part? Purchasing a cake pop for $1.50 in the morning earns you a treat receipt. West has been very helpful to Mama lately.

FRIENDS: every so often I get a hankering for that great sitcom. I popped in Season 2 (I may be a huge fan, but I can’t stand Season 1) while working on a project and laughed all over again.

SCBWI Writer’s Conference schedule: I can’t wait to go to this once-in-a-lifetime conference this coming weekend! In the meantime, I’ve been poring over the website, reading up on all the 50+ speakers and agonizing over which workshops to attend.

My Pinterest board titled How Do I Look?: I am officially sick of my outdated wardrobe and have been pinning tons of outfit inspirations! As soon as I have money, I’m going shoppin’!

Moriarty’s Final Threat: my last Sherlock Academy book. I finished a final read-through, and I love it. I’m so excited to share it with everyone in September. Until then, go to www.sherlockacademy.com

Puzzles: Westly loves doing puzzles and I love watching him do them.

What's Going On?

Summer is supposed to be a time of ease, filled with long days of familiarity, where the only changes are spontaneous choices you make to do fun summer things. It’s the lounge before the fall (both literal and metaphorical). When autumn hits and school is back, you hit the ground running and embrace all the change that comes with it.
Well, the Shaws have already undergone some big changes this summer.
First, I have had to drastically change my diet to lower my cholesterol (it’s still high even though I’ve weaned Westly)
Next, Michael is selling his car, which will change our lives a bit as we share one vehicle.
Also, we’ve had to change some parenting tactics as Westly is exploring tantrums.
Sadly, my best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of June, which has of course changed her life and affected mine as well.
Lastly, I’ve finished my book series and am now changing to a new story.

If this is our summer, what on earth does our autumn look like?

Too Much of a Good Thing

I’ve lost it. That writing momentum. And it’s because I went on vacation. Just taking a week off from writing has done great damage. I’m having a hard time feeling inspired, focused, and motivated to write. Of course it was well worth it, for vacation in Tahoe was the best yet! But now I’m hit with the harsh reality that July is slipping by, and the writer’s conference will be here before I know it!
One good thing: I got a final copy of Sherlock Academy Book 5, complete with finished cover and all. So I’m reading through it one last time before I order a batch for it’s September release…

….which will also be here before I know it!

Our Big Summer Vacation

It's become a family tradition: Shaw vacation in Tahoe. This year the whole gang made it and we had a week of fun.

A New Plot

Here’s a start to my League of Sleuths story I’m considering:

Two extraordinary things marked that dreary November morning as the day his life changed forever. It was the last time he saw his mother, and it was the first time he met his uncle.
He watched his mother’s coffin lowered into the ground. When he looked up, he saw an older man watching him from beneath a black fedora. The man nodded and climbed into a black sedan parked by the curb just outside the cemetery gates.
Twelve year old Euston Hood gave one last glance at the tombstone engraved with Marion Hood, Loving Mother, Widowed Wife. He wiped his nose, turned away from the grave, and headed for the sedan. He climbed inside, but did not face his uncle. Instead he studied the rain droplets melting into his black wool coat.
“Drive on, Chester,” the uncle ordered softly.
The chauffer steered the car away from the curb.
“You’re rather tall, boy,” the uncle said, staring out the window to his left. “But then I remember your father had been a tall man. Six foot, I’d say he was.”
 “Yes,” Euston croaked.
Yellow. A mustard shade of yellow.

The number six danced around in his mind. And it was chartreuse yellow. Always was, always had been.

Looky Here

A surreal moment: finding my books in our town’s public library! Great moment!

This or That?

I’m torn right now. I have two stories I am considering writing. I haven’t had this dilemma for…gosh, ever. Five years ago I embarked on writing a new story, Sherlock Academy. But I wasn’t torn between that and another story. I just had that story in my head and wrote it.
I’m finished with Sherlock Academy now. For the past few months I thought I would write the story of Toby Turnkettle. But recently I’ve been brewing a second story. The funny thing is this second story was spawned from a title that originally spawned Sherlock Academy!
The League of Sleuths
I’ve had this title knocking around my head for over five years. From it I created Sherlock Academy, but obviously never used it. But now I may use it for another mystery story I’m cooking up.

Dilemma: go with Toby Turnkettle or League of Sleuths….or both?

Our Fourth 4th

It's an official tradition: the family celebrates the 4th at the Shaw Manor. We always eat dinner then sit out on our front corner for dessert and fireworks. We light our own, watch the neighbors, and enjoy some pro ones a few miles away. Great fun!

The Cover of It All

My wonderful graphic designer who creates my book covers finished two options for me this week. I sent him my cover art and instructions on what I want and he sent back two great cover options. They’re exactly the same except for the cover color. I think I’ve made a decision on which one to use, but I’m going to sit on it a few more days. It’s a big decision choosing the cover. The cover is the first sell. All that hogwash about not judging a book by its cover is bologna. Everyone does it whether they mean to or not.

And I want my book to be judged fairly.
